Connecting Your Router to the ONU

If you have fibre broadband, you'll need to connect your router to the Optical Network Unit (ONU). Here's how:

What is an ONU?

An ONU (Optical Network Unit) converts the optical signal from the fibre cable into an electrical signal that your router can use. It's typically installed by your service provider.

Connection Steps

  1. Locate the ONU device (usually installed near your main phone socket or in a utility area)
  2. Connect an Ethernet cable from one of the LAN ports on the ONU to the WAN/Internet port on your router
  3. Power on both devices
  4. Wait for the lights on both devices to stabilize (usually 1-2 minutes)
  5. Check that the ONU shows a connection light
  6. Check that your router shows internet connectivity

Troubleshooting

  • No connection: Check all cables are securely connected
  • Router not getting IP: Try power cycling both devices
  • Slow speeds: Ensure you're using a Cat5e or Cat6 Ethernet cable
  • ONU lights not on: Check power connection and contact support
